Undergrads to learn soft skills from next month
CYBERJAYA: To ensure they are competent workers, undergraduates in public universities will be taught soft skills beginning early next month.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapa Mohamed said he was taking into consideration complaints from employers that graduates lacked soft skills.
“We take these views seriously, which is why we are introducing this new module for the new 2006/07 intake,” he said after Multimedia University’s orientation programme for new students yesterday.
“My mission is to ensure our graduates have the necessary skills.”
Mustapa said he would meet the vice-chancellors from the 18 public universities in a week’s time to discuss the details of the soft skills module.
“We will start with public universities first before inviting the private colleges and universities for similar talks,” he said.
Mustapa said the soft skills module would be targeted at those who would be graduating soon.
Asked whether this module would be an examination subject, he said the details were still being worked out.
Multimedia University president Prof Datuk Dr Ghauth Jasmon, in his welcome address, encouraged the students to work hard and to take the opportunity to widen their experience by getting to know foreign students at the university.
